evviejo:

When I was rewatching The Reckoning, something struck me.

We all remember episode 1x03, the scene in which Stefan gives Elena the vervain necklace. And since then - until season 3 at least - she wears it virtually all the time. A little bit like a wedding ring, as if it was showing she “belongs” to Stefan.

Damon knows the significance of the necklace - it’s Stefan’s first gift for Elena, it protects her, he knows she wouldn’t want to lose it. And despite the fact that he sees it as this sort of “Stefan territory marker” and despite the fact that he loves and wants Elena - every single time Elena lost the necklace and he could give it back to her, he did. And it wasn’t about vervain - it wouldn’t be a problem for Elena to drink vervain. It was strictly because it was something his brother gave her, a symbol that she was Stefan’s.

He could try to destroy that, to keep the necklace when he found it in Ric’s loft, or never to look for it after Elena’s confrontation with Elijah. But he did, gave it back to her. And as long as she’s holding on to the necklace, she’s holding on tightly to Stefan. She gave the necklace to Rebekah in Homecoming - the very episode in which she says to Damon “then we’ll let him go”. When they really kiss for the first time in The New Deal - she’s not wearing the necklace. As if the bond was broken.

And they seem to be drifting further and further apart.

And Elena drifts steadily towards the one who always gave way, always returning the symbol of Stefan’s love for her. And it is through that he showed his own love. That’s the symbol of Damon’s love.

Can we take a moment and look at Elena’s face. This is right after Elena and Damon made out and Jeremy came out of the hotel room and interrupted them. I want you to look at her face. After the initial shock that her brother just came out and saw her making out with her maybe ex-boyfriend’s brother, she smiles. She is clearly going over what happened and she smiled. Not a huge smile but it was there. She smiled about that moment she just shared with Damon. Then when she thinks more about it her face turns confused because that is clearly the moment she realizes she is completely in love with Damon Salvatore.
